Note under BCN 491 and BCN 2366 that Crimson (491) was cut-up in
1954 to form the Sapphire (2366). Built by Yates at Norton Canes in
1954. Canal traffic on the
Birmingham Canal Navigations existed in a world of its own, employing
vast fleets of narrow ‘Joey’ boats to service mines, quarries and
ironwork. Sapphire,
built for T and S Element Ltd., was one of the last craft to enter
service and is now one of only a few remaining Joey boats from the
hundreds built. She was
formed from the remains of Crimson, which was cut up in 1954.
Sapphire is double
ended, so the rudder could be transferred from one end to the other to
avoid turning in confined areas.
Principal routes not
only joined up with long distance canals, but pushed out arms to
colliery, factory and later railway goods stations.
Therefore the journeys were short and the boats were not
generally lived in. Many
were quite open as was Sapphire, although she did have a small cabin.
Cabins like Sapphire’s would have contained an L-shaped
bench, a small locker or shelf and an upright bottle store which was
mainly used for heating but, with a bar across it, the crew could boil
up a kettle. In
her working life, Sapphire was used to bring coal from the Cannock
coal fields to feed the industries of the Black Country.
In later years, she may also have worked for the National Coal
Board and Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd. Her working life ended in 1977, being one of those docked by
Peter Keay and Sons at Walsall.
In 1983 Birmingham
Canal Navigation donated Sapphire to the Boat Museum Collection at
Ellesmere Port.
She was one of the last craft to enter service and lasted until
1977, being one of those docked by Peter Keay and Son at Walsall BCN Photos |
